How do you get curly hair?

i have naturally thick hair with a lot ov volume and i want to find a way to curl it. i tried sleeping on rollers and it made it way too curly i treied using a curling iron but it didnt help at all. does anybody know how i can get loosely curled hair?

if you can find steam rollers, they are the best. they hold the curl no matter how stubborn your hair is. and they are as tight or loose as you want them to be. and you know how they have hot rollers with only a little metal clip to hold them in? well these have a full plastic cuff that covers the whole roller so it doesn't fall out. they are just hard to find sometimes.
