What is the best way to cut out curly hair using photoshop 7.0?

Try using the magnetic lasso tool with a high amount of feathering. You can select the negative space, cut it out, and then use the Smudge tool to touch up the edges and re-form strands that got messed up.

When working with such things, it's helpful to zoom in as much as you possibly can. If you can zoom in enough, you might even be able to get in there with a regular soft-edged brush, or fill in one pixel at a time.

You can also consider altering the background to resemble the background visible through the translucent bits of his hair. Try altering the tone of the new background by going over it with transparent brushes and effects like "color dodge" and "saturation." You can make the area near his head blend into the rest of the background like there's a variation in lighting. This also gives you a chance to get creative with your backgrounds. In the process, you can meet halfway by using a small, transparent brush with the background color to fix up areas of the hair that just don't match up right, for example if his head is completely backed by blue sky. Remember also that with hair, we are less likely to see blue sky peeking through than we are to just see a general illuminating effect from the sun that overrides any background color.

If you're trying to just erase, you have less options for the hardness of the brush... but again, with enough patience, you can erase one pixel at a time on high zoom.

Do you have a Wacom graphics tablet, or are you using a mouse?
